Healthy Eating while Dining Out

It may surprise you to learn that we consume 50% more calories, fat and sodium when we eat out rather than cook at home. But dining out can be an opportunity to make healthy choices as well as being a fun social occasion.

If you're choosing the restaurant, why not pick one that serves fresh, wholesome food? A good idea is to contact the restaurant beforehand and request details of the menu, as well as asking if they cater to special needs, such as cooking without butter. Often, restaurants will display their menus online or in the telephone directory, or will graciously fax you their fare.

As a customer, you can call the shots, so be assertive. If they use oil, ask that food be prepared differently, i.e. steamed or broiled.

Don't be tempted to starve yourself that day in anticipation of a big meal. Eat regularly to prevent yourself becoming overly-hungry. Take time in selecting healthy choices from the menu.

Ask for a "to go" container. Eat only what you need, leave the rest and take it home. Have the leftovers the next day or, if you don't want to eat the meal again, give it away.

Bon Appetit!
